Overview
Solar System Explorer is an educational project that takes you on a scroll-driven journey through our solar system. We are committed to minimal data practices and collect as little information as possible. The site is a static website with no user accounts and no backend server, so there is nowhere for us to store personal data even if we wanted to.
Analytics
To understand — in aggregate — how the voyage is used, so it can be improved, this site uses two privacy-first analytics tools. Neither identifies you or follows you across other websites.
- Does not use cookies or local storage
- Does not collect personal data or IP addresses
- Does not track individual visitors across sites
- Only provides anonymous, aggregate metrics (page views, referrers, country-level location)
PostHog records anonymous product events — for example, reaching a world, completing a mission, or sharing a Voyage Log — so we can see which parts of the journey people enjoy. It is deliberately configured to be cookieless and privacy-first:
- Does not use cookies or local storage — each visit is anonymous and held only in memory
- Does not collect your name, email, or any personal information
- Does not record your screen, mouse movements, or session
- Does not build a profile of you or track you across other websites
- Events are processed on PostHog's EU servers

This website does not use cookies of any kind.
Your Progress
As you explore, this site remembers your journey — the worlds you have visited, the missions and quizzes you have completed, the patches you have earned, and whether you have finished the Scale Walk. This progress is saved only in your own browser, using local storage on your device. It has no account attached, is never sent to us or to any server, and you can erase it at any time from your browser’s settings (which simply resets your progress).
If you choose to share your Voyage Log, a short, non-identifying summary of your progress — which worlds and patches you have collected — is encoded into the link you share. It contains no personal information, and sharing is entirely your choice.
Data Sources
The scientific data presented on this site — including planetary measurements, orbital parameters, and mission details — is sourced from publicly available NASA/JPL datasets, used for educational purposes under public domain terms.
Some features show a source image alongside a fact (the “How We Know” credits). When you open one, that image is loaded directly from the relevant NASA/JPL server, so your browser makes a request to that server — the same as viewing any image hosted elsewhere.
